(Dark Garnet : Cadillac : 1960)This red automotive paint color is most commonly known as Dark Garnet. Another common paint color promotional name is Chianti Maroon. The color formulation has been used only in 1960, primarily by Cadillac; but also by Buick. See the full detailed list below. The primary use of this paint is for interior color. Many interior paints where semi-gloss or flat versions of exterior colors. Lower gloss finishes could be created by adding a half ounce of Flattening Compound to a pint of the unreduced color. An unpolished version of the paint generally produced a semi-gloss finish for repair.
50561 is a paint code for PPG (Pittsburgh Plate Glass) who has been providing automotive paints since 1924 (originally Ditzler Color Company subsidiary acquired in 1928). PPG/Ditzler codes from 10000 to 95000 were used on new paint formulations starting in the late 1930's and extending to around 1968 in the USA. Formulations used for trim, imports, and special orders continue to the present. PPG/Ditzler codes in the 50000 to 59999 range are primarily shades of dark red/maroon and purple. These PPG codes serve as a great way to track the usage of paint between and within vehicle manufacturers.
