This black automotive paint color is most commonly known as simply 'Black'. Other common color promotional names include Carlsbad Black, Corsican Black, Ebony, Ebony Black, Jet Black, Onyx, Onyx Black, and Raven Black. The color formulation has been used between 1955 and 1961, primarily by Chevrolet; but also by Buick, Cadillac, GM, Oldsmobile, Packard, and Pontiac. See the full detailed list below. The use of this paint is for main body and interior color. Many interior paints where semi-gloss or flat versions of exterior colors. Lower gloss finishes could be created by adding a half ounce of Flattening Compound to a pint of the unreduced color. An unpolished version of the paint generally produced a semi-gloss finish for repair.

9200 is a paint code for PPG (Pittsburgh Plate Glass) who has been providing automotive paints since 1924 (originally Ditzler Color Company subsidiary acquired in 1928). PPG/Ditzler codes in the 9000 to 9999 range were used on new paint formulations from the late 1930's to 1968 in the general shade of black.
