The color formulation has been used between 1971 and 1994, primarily by AMC; but also by Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, and Rambler. Autocolor paint code 3922M is a single layer metallic paint. Variations of this code can include 3922 for a solid color paint, 3922M for a single layer metallic, 3922B followed with a clearcoat, 3922G including a groundcoat, and the rare 3922T for a 3-coat process. Multiple codes with different single-character suffixes indicate the use of multiple processes/finishes. Note: we have found some reuse of a few 4 character Autocolor codes as well as the 4-character base code not matching the base color of the B, M, G, T suffix code. Where possible, we have specifically identified these code conflicts.

Autocolor has been providing paint since 1883, and was part of the Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in Britain. PPG bought them out in 1999, and changed their name to Nexa Autocolor in 2002. Base Autocolor codes are 4 alfa-numeric characters optionally followed by a suffix letter indicating the finish. Suffix options are none for solid colors, M for single layer metallic, B for basecoat followed by a clearcoat, T for a 3-coat pearl-effect, and G for a groundcoat. Extra paint group codes include T01, T02, T03... for tinted clearcoats; SG01, SG02, SG03 for grey undercoat; M01, M02, M03 for matted clearcoat, and U01, U02, U03 for stripe paints. Multiple groups can exist for a paint use.
