(Neutral Shale : GM : 1997)This brown automotive paint color is most commonly known as Neutral Shale. The color formulation has been used only in 1997, primarily by GM. See the detailed list below. The primary use of this paint is for interior color. Many interior paints where semi-gloss or flat versions of exterior colors. Lower gloss finishes could be created by adding a half ounce of Flattening Compound to a pint of the unreduced color. An unpolished version of the paint generally produced a semi-gloss finish for repair.
GM paint manufacturing codes come in two forms, the short 1 to 3 digit model/year code which changes frequently; and beginning in the 1960's a longer 4 digit code which starts with the letters "WA" or "WE". Sometimes called "Fisher Paint codes"; codes beginning with WA are production paints, WE are commercial or special order paints with codes typically starting with '5' (i.e.
WE5xxx). Starting in the early 1994, GM began using a letter as the last digit for all new WA paint codes.
